Cryptocurrencies: what are they and how do they work
It is of crucial importance to understand what cryptocurrencies are and how they work, especially nowadays, in the middle of a virtual expansion, where these technologies represent our future.
Cryptocurrencies act as virtual currencies to all intents and purposes and are thus intangible; they are, in fact, based on the principles of cryptography.
They are open source digital instruments that go beyond the traditional concept of
currencies put into circulation by the Governments, making it possible to perform the same operations,
securely and anonymously.
Data regarding cryptocurrency transactions are stored and transmitted, but they can only
be read by the beneficiary of the transaction.

As mentioned before, cryptocurrencies are virtual, decentralized and encrypted currencies that are transferred through a peer-to-peer (p2p) technology, where the nodes are not organized in a hierarchic structure, but are equal.
Most currencies have a digital origin and derive from a process called mining (this term is borrowed from gold mining).
Digital currencies are conceived through complicated mathematical processes developed by specific software. Users can also choose to purchase cryptocurrencies from brokers and then place them or spend them through digital wallets.
In order to avoid inflation or value increases, most cryptocurrencies are designed so as to
include quantitative restrictions for currency units in the system. In the case of Bitcoins, for
instance, mining operations will stop once the limit of 21 million units is reached.
The mining process is open, and anyone – subject to the limits mentioned above – can create cryptocurrencies by developing specific algorithms; however, payments have to be made in order to avoid the problem known as double-spending.
